The Bergen County Police Academy operates within the state-of-the-art training facility known as the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute located in Mahwah, New Jersey. The Bergen County Police Academy is operated by a cadre of personnel from the County of Bergen’s Administration, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and our municipal law enforcement partners.

The Bergen County Police Academy strives to maintain the highest level of training for our regional professional law enforcement community. We continuously research the most effective training methods to ensure that we deliver the most applicable, highest quality training to our customers. Our police academy offers practical approaches to learning that provides our students with a balanced classroom environment of lectures, combined with the use of realistic scenarios, to better prepare our law officers for real world application to emergent situations.

The staff at the Bergen County Police Academy is dedicated to developing capable law enforcement officers to deliver safe, effective, efficient and professional services to the communities that they serve. The Bergen County Police Academy offers a comprehensive array of training courses that address the professional development needs of today’s New Jersey law enforcement organizations from the entry-level training through the supervisory-level training.

Recruit and in-service training focus on effective community policing, de-escalation, communication skills, safe tactics, and the privilege of serving our state’s most diverse population. The Bergen County Police Academy provides advanced and specialized training for New Jersey’s certified law enforcement officers in dozens of instructional areas to include: the use of force, emergency vehicle operations, criminal investigations, drug enforcement and drug recognition, firearms, forensics, legal, organizational development, traffic safety, physical fitness, counter-terrorism, intelligence gathering, active shooter response, counter surveillance, emergency medical responder, cardio pulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillator, stop the bleed and specialized training.

The Bergen County Police Academy provides academic and physical preparation to uniformed police officers and correctional police officer titled personnel of various law enforcement agencies throughout the Northeastern region of the State of New Jersey. Recruits undergo extensive, rigorous preparation, promoting the most highly trained and effective law enforcement professionals in the region. The Bergen County Police Academy provides our students with the latest technology, education, and tactical knowledge to enhance their abilities to protect the lives, rights, property, and dignity of Bergen County residents and our visitors.
